RESPIRATORY SYSTEM PEDIATRICS MNEMONICS

Asthma in paediatric history : "HINDERS growth"
H - Hospital admissions/ITU
I - Interference with school/work/sleep
N - Nocturnal/morning cough
D - Drugs – what medications and how often they are used
E - Eczema/hay fever/allergens
R - Record – PEFR diary
S - Symptoms e.g. wheeze, breathlessness

Cough (chronic): differential "CRADLE"
C - Cystic fibrosis
R - Rings, slings, and airway things (tracheal rings)/ Respiratory infections
A - Aspiration (swallowing dysfunction, TE fistula, gastroesphageal reflux)
D - Dyskinetic cilia
L - Lung, airway, and vascular malformations (tracheomalacia, vocal cord dysfunction)
E - Edema (heart failure)

Croup symptoms : "3 Ss"
• Stridor
• Subglottic swelling
• Seal-bark cough

Cystic fibrosis, exacerbation of pulmonary infection : "CF PANCREAS"
C - Cough (increase in intensity and frequent spells)
F - Fever (usually low grade, unless severe bronchopneumonia is present)
P - Pulmonary function deterioration
A - Appetite decrease
N - Nutrition, weight loss
C - CBC (leukocytosis with left shift)
R - Radiograph (increase overaeration, peribronchial thickening, mucus plugging)
E - Exam (rales or wheezing in previously clear areas, tachypnea, retractions)
A - Activity (decreased, impaired exercise intolerance, increased absenteeism)
S - Sputum (becomes darker, thicker, and more abundant, forming plugs)

Stridor causes : "Helicopter War Cannot SAVE Life"
• Hypocalcaemia (chronic)
• Web, laryngeal (chronic)
• Croup (acute)
• Subglottic stenosis (chronic)
• Acute epiglotitis (acute stridor)
• Vocal cord paralysis (chronic stridor)
• External compression e.g. vascular ring (chronic)
• Laryngomalacia (chronic)
