AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM DRUGS MNEMONICS
Adrenoceptors: vasomotor function of alpha vs. beta "ABCD"
Alpha = Constrict.
Beta = Dilate.
Anticholinergic side effects : "ABCD-S"
Anorexia
Blurry vision
Constipation/Confusion
Dry Mouth
Sedation/Stasis of urine
Antimuscarinics members, Action : "Inhibits Parasympathetic And Sweat"
• Ipratropium
• Pirenzepine
• Atropine
• Scopolamine

Muscarinic receptors at all parasympathetic endings inhibits sweat glands
Atropine use: "A to B"
Atropine is used clinically to treat Bradycardia.
Beta 1 selective blockers : "MEA"
M - Metropolol
E - Esmolol
A - Atenolol
Beta 1 selective blockers : "A-BEAM"
A - Acebutalol
B - Betaxolol
E - Esmolol
A - Atenolol
M - Metoprolol
Beta 2 agonists: "SMART"
S - Salmeterol
M - Metaproterenol
A - Aluterol
R - Ritodrine
T - Terbutaline
Beta blockers members : "The NEPAL Prime Minister"
• Timolol
N - Nadolol
E - Esmolol
P - Pindolol
A - Atenolol
L - Labetalol
• Propranolol
• Metoprolol
Beta blockers with CYP2D6 polymorphic metabolism : "Meet Timothy Carter"

The following beta blockers require dose adjustment due to CYP2D6 polymorphic metabolism:

• Metoprolol
• Timolol
• Carvedilol

(in patients with lower or higher than normal CYP2D6 activity)
Beta blockers: B1 selective vs. B1-B2 non-selective A through N: B1 selective: Acebutalol, Atenolol, Esmolol, Metoprolol.

O through Z: B1, B2 non-selective: Pindolol, Propanalol, Timolol.
Beta-1 vs Beta-2 receptor location : "You have 1 heart and 2 lungs"
Beta-1 are therefore primarily on heart.

Beta-2 primarily on lungs.
Beta-blockers main contraindications: "ABCDE"
• Asthma
• Block (heart block)
• COPD
• Diabetes mellitus
• Electrolyte (hyperkalemia)
Beta-blockers, nonselective beta-blockers : "Please Never Take Her (to) Persia "
• Propranolol
• Naldolol
• Timolol
• Hismolol
• Pindolol
Beta-blockers: side effects : "BBC Loses Viewers In Rwanda"
Bradycardia
Bronchoconstriction
Claudication
Lipids
Vivid dreams & nightmares
-ve Inotropic action
Reduced sensitivity to hypoglycaemia
Direct sympathomimetic catecholamines : "Nadia DIED"
• Norepinephrine
D - Dopamine
I - Isoproterenol
E - Epinephrine
D - Dobutamine
Guanethidine: mechanism : GuaNEthidine prevents
NE (norepinephrine) release.
Ipratropium: Action: Atropine is buried in the middle =≥ "iprAtropium" so it behaves like Atropine.
Methyldopa side effects : "METHYLDOPA"
M - Mental retardation
E - Electrolyte imbalance
T - Tolerance
H - Headache/Hepatotoxicity
Y - psYcological upset
L - Lactation in female
D - Dry mouth

D - Diarrhea
U - Urination
M - Miosis
B - Bradycardia
B - Bronchoconstriction
L - Lacrimation
A - Abdominal cramps/Anorexia
S - Salivation
S - Secretions
S - Sweating
Myasthenia gravis: edrophonium vs. pyridostigmine : eDrophonium is for Diagnosis.
pyRIDostigmine is to get RIDof symptoms.
Nicotinic effects: "MT-WTF-H (days of week)"
M - Mydriasis/Muscle cramps
T - Tachycardia
W - Weakness
T - Twitching
F - Fasiculation
H - Hypertension/Hyperglycemia
Parasympathetic vs. sympathetic neurotransmitters : "No Sympathy for an American Politician"
Norepinephrene is secreted in by the Sympathetic nervous system
while Acetylcholine is secreted in the Parasympathetic nervous system.
Parkinsonism Drugs "SALAD"
S : Selegiline
A : Anticholinenergics (trihexyphenidyl, benzhexol, ophenadrine)
L : L-Dopa + peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor (carbidopa, benserazide)
A : Amantadine
D : Dopamine postsynaptic receptor agonists (bromocriptine, lisuride, pergolide)
Physostigmine vs. neostigmine : Physostigmine
"LMNOP"
Lipid soluble
Miotic
Natural
Orally absorbed well
Physostigmine

Neostigmine on the contrary, is:
Water soluble
Used in myesthenia gravis
Synthetic
Poor oral absorption
Prazocin Usage :
Prazocin sounds like an acronym of "praszz zour urine".
Therefore Prazocin used for urinary retention in BPH.
